"Spectrum R&R" --> Respite & Recreation Program 2020
— OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT —
Summer Programming, modified for 2020
After much deliberation we regret to announce that we will not be running Camp Spectrum this summer. Our Chapter has been working hard this past month to find alternative ways to safely offer recreation and respite support to families. And it is now official! We present to you: Spectrum R&R — a summer respite and recreation program, modified to comply with Public Health guidelines!
Details:
We will be providing 1-to-1 respite for a maximum of two participants per day. The program will run from 10:30am to 3:00pm daily (Monday to Friday, excluding August 3rd) from July 13 to August 21. One week we'll use our Kingston Autism Centre as a home-base and the following week our Kentville Centre will be our home base. We'll offer three weeks geared to younger kids and three weeks focused on teens and adults. Age groups and locations are flexible and will be adjusted in response to expressed interest. Outings and activities will take place out of doors as much as possible. Each day of the week will have a specific recreation focus; these themes will remain consistent throughout the six-week duration of the program. Here's a list of potential outings, by theme (currently not confirmed):
Participants have various attendance options: a family can register their child/youth/adult for just one day, one full week, one day per week, or pick random days throughout the summer. At this point, we are limiting families to five days maximum over the duration of the program, but if registration is on the low side we may offer additional days. Spots will be filled on a first come, first served basis. We'll try, as much as possible, to match the two participants who attend on a given day by age, ability and interests. There will be 70 spots in total available.
Rigorous cleaning, sanitizing and handwashing protocols will be followed at both Autism Centres, during travel to/from outings and when out in the community. Available toys, games, books, arts & crafts supplies and equipment will be reduced at both Centres. Social distancing will be maintained between staff and participants as well as with others out in the community whenever possible. (Full health and safety protocol available upon request.)
It's been quite the challenge to plan this year's programming and we appreciate your patience and understanding. We're very much looking forward to seeing some familiar as well as some new faces this summer!

CAMP SPECTRUM - 2019
Registration for Camp Spectrum, Annapolis Valley's summer day camp for children, youth, and young adults with Autism is now open!
Camp Spectrum is a recreation program for children, youth, and young adults on the autism spectrum. Each camper receives 1 to 1 support from counselors with autism-related experience and training and activities are designed specifically with each individual participant's needs and interests in mind. On the surface, our camp looks like any other -- we will go swimming, boating, do arts & crafts -- but we will also make adaptations to accommodate the special sensory and behavioural needs of all our campers.
