We're looking for Staff for our Summer Day Camp!!!

Camp Spectrum is a recreation program for individuals on the autism spectrum (age 3+).  Each camper is supported with a 1:1 camper/counsellor ratio and activities are designed specifically with participants’ needs and interests in mind.  The day camp will take place, one week at a time, in different locations throughout the Annapolis Valley.  Application closing date is Friday, March 22, 2019 at 4:30 p.m.


Camp Coordinator

Program:             Camp Spectrum – Summer Day Camp
Time:                    Approximately 40 hours / week (Flexibility required)
Pay:                      $15.00 per hour
Term:                   10 weeks
                              Starting Monday, June 10, 2019 and ending Tuesday, August 20, 2019
                              Exact dates not confirmed.
Location:              Various locations within the Annapolis Valley

Accountability:
The Camp Coordinator is accountable to the Chapter Navigator.

Responsibility:     
The Camp Coordinator is responsible to run and facilitate the camp under the supervision of the Chapter Navigator. The Camp Coordinator reports to the Chapter Navigator and speaks for the camp in the Chapter Navigator's absence. The Camp Coordinator, along with the Camp Counselors, is responsible to ensure a safe, fun, active and enjoyable recreational day camp experience for the participants in the camp program.

General Duties:
The Camp Coordinator is responsible for the following:

  • To adhere to policies and procedures, including those outlined in the Autism Nova Scotia Employee package.
  • Working with the Chapter Navigator, to plan/organize camp schedule and counsellor training week.
  • To document the steps involved in planning summer camp.
  • To contact organizations to book dates for outings, as required.
  • To organize the structure of each day’s programming, and to implement and oversee daily camp activities as per program schedule.
  • To manage volunteers, if required.
  • To work directly with children, youth, and adults on the spectrum, ensuring all campers are treated with dignity and respect, and that the health and safety needs of each camper are met at all times.
  • To administer any medications required by campers as per instructions given by parents/physician.
  • To mentor and support staff.
  • To ensure good communication with staff, parents, and campers regarding camp activities.
  • To ensure camp facilities are cleaned up and in order.
  • To follow-up after camp with reorganization of supplies and final reporting/documentation.
  • Other duties as required.
     
Qualifications:
  • A great deal of knowledge and experience working with individuals with autism
  • Knowledge and experience supervising and managing a team
  • Knowledge and experience in planning and facilitating recreation-based activities
  • Good leadership skills
  • University/College graduate or student in a post-secondary program
  • Good communication skills (written and oral)
  • Must be punctual, reliable and efficient with paperwork
  • Must be able to work independently
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Up-to-date First Aid certification
  • Up-to-date Criminal Records check (with Vulnerable Sector check)
  • Up-to-date Child Abuse Registry Check
  • Valid driver’s license; access to own vehicle

Camp Counselor

Program:        Camp Spectrum – Summer Day Camp
Time:               Approximately 35 hours / week (Flexibility required)
Pay:                 $12.50 per hour
Term:              8 weeks
                        Starting Monday, June 24, 2019 and ending Friday, August 16, 2019
                        Exact dates not confirmed
Location:        Various locations within the Annapolis Valley

Accountability:
The Camp Counselor is accountable to the Camp Coordinator.

Responsibility
The Camp Counselor acts as a guardian and facilitator for the child assigned to his/her care during camp hours.  The Camp Counselor is responsible to ensure a safe, fun, active and enjoyable recreational day camp experience for the children in the camp program.

General Duties:
The Camp Counsellor is responsible for the following:

  • To adhere to policies and procedures, including those outlined in the Autism Nova Scotia Employee package.
  • To ensure all campers are treated with dignity and respect.
  • To ensure the health and safety needs of each camper are met at all times.
  • To never leave a camper unattended in the camp or community and to be able to account for a camper’s whereabouts at all times.
  • To ensure camp facilities are cleaned up and in order.
  • Other duties as required.
     
Qualifications:
  • Knowledge and experience working with individuals with autism
  • Age 18 or over
  • Post-secondary student
  • Good communication skills (written and oral)
  • Must exhibit energy, enthusiasm, and initiative
  • Must be able to work independently
  • Strong organizational skills
  • First Aid certification preferred
  • Up-to-date Criminal Records Check (with Vulnerable Sector Check)
  • Up-to-date Child Abuse Registry Check
  • Valid driver’s license; access to own vehicle preferred
  • Note:  A practical portion may be added to the standard interview process in order to further evaluate aptitude in a practical setting.
