A new program coming to the Valley Autism Centres!
Thanks to very generous grants recently received from both the NS Dept. of Communities, Culture & Heritage and from our local Community Health Boards, the Chapter will be offering a Weekend Social Group and Respite Program for families with a member with autism. The program will begin this March and will take place on Sundays, occurring on a rotating basis at our Kingston Autism Centre and our Kentville Autism Centre. Open to those ages 4 and up, two 4-hour social group sessions will take place on each designated Sunday. The sessions, which will include arts & crafts, games, cooking and free-play time, will be staffed by experienced, qualified respite care providers with a participant to worker ratio of between 2:1 and 3:1. This ratio will be determined by the needs of those participants who register for a given session. We will be able to accept between 4 and 6 participants for each 4-hour session or between 8 and 12 participants per Sunday.
Thanks to the funding the Chapter has received for this program we will be keeping the cost to families for each 4-hour session to $10 per participant. We hope that this program will provide an option for families with a member with autism to access affordable respite care provided by experienced workers.
Spots will be filled on a first-come-first-serve basis. We will limit participation to 1 x per month per family, unless we find we have open spaces. If registration numbers are high, then participants who are registering for the first time will be given preference to those who have already participated in the program. Registration will be opened two weeks in advance of each designated Sunday. With the potential for between 72 and 108 spots available between March 1st and June 21st* we believe there will be lots of opportunities for many families to take advantage of this program.
A Profile form must be filled out for each participant before they can attend the program. At the beginning and end of the program, caregivers will be asked to complete a very brief, confidential survey about their family's respite needs and experiences.
